Women’s Heart Health: Give Your Heart Some Love

Jan 11 2021

Women’s Heart Month

With the month of love coming up, it’s pretty hard to avoid all the heart-themed imagery that surrounds you. From candies to clothing, hearts are cropping up everywhere you look! That’s why Velvet Heart is here to talk to you about something truly important—your heart. In addition to hosting Valentine’s Day, February is also women’s heart health month and it’s more important than you think. We’re raising money and recognition for women’s heart disease awareness month. Learn more about how you can support the fight against heart disease here!

Quick Stats

Did you know that heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States? One in three women will die of heart disease every year! You might think you’re not at risk because you’re young and you feel healthy, but that’s not necessarily true. Over the last two decades, heart attacks in women ages 35-54 have risen from 21% to 31% and doctors are worried. Even more problematic, the signs of a heart attack for women aren’t as discernable as they are in men.

While many people know about chest pain and pressure, do you also know that pain in different parts of your upper body, lightheadedness, cold sweats, fatigue, nausea, and shortness of breath could signal a heart attack? It’s time to take control of your education and protect yourself from heart disease. Women’s heart month is a way for us to help to spread the word.

What You Can Do

Many doctors are focusing on preventative care for heart disease and heart attacks. This means taking care of your body and noting down any factors that increase your risk of damaging your heart. Diabetes, obesity, an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, and excessive alcohol could all be contributing to heart disease. So what do you plan to do about it?

You only have one heart, so you need to take care of it! Take these seven steps to get you started:

  1. Maintain a healthy weight
  2. Eat a balanced diet
  3. Create an exercise regimen
  4. Manage your blood pressure
  5. Stop smoking and reduce alcohol consumption
  6. Reduce your blood sugar
  7. Track your cholesterol

Even changing just one of these factors during women’s heart month can make a major difference to your overall health.

Raising Money

Velvet Heart wants to do everything we can to raise money for women’s heart month. When you shop our heart health collection, we’ll be donating $5 from each sale to the American Heart Association. Shop any heart print shirt in our store to help us in our efforts to make a difference!

Other Ways to Help

Raising awareness is an important part of women’s heart health month. Join us in wearing RED on Friday, February 5, 2021 to bring awareness to women's heart health. At Velvet Heart, all the women (and men too) will be wearing red and we'll be posting throughout the day to share our commitment and support for women’s heart disease awareness month. Wear red and tag us to spread the word!

Don’t have any red blouses to wear? Shop our Valentine’s Day collection to find the perfect piece.
